When the first Christmas lights start to twinkle in South Lincs, locals know exactly what that means – it’s time to head to Birchgrove.
Every year, the garden centre on Surfleet Road transforms from green-fingered haven to full-blown winter wonderland. From sparkling decorations to towering trees and twinkling lights, it’s the place families come to find a little festive magic – and this year, it’s bigger, brighter, and merrier than ever.
✨ The Team Behind the Magic
Turning Birchgrove into a Christmas spectacle is no small feat. Months of planning, countless cups of tea, and approximately one million branches later, the team have worked their festive socks off to create a space that captures the season perfectly.
Birchgrove owner Gary Slator said: “It’s a proper team effort.
“Mark, Marlene, and Richard have been the main elves in charge this year, but everyone’s had a hand in it – especially when it came to spreading out all those branches on the artificial trees. I think we’re all seeing pine needles in our sleep!”
That hard work has paid off. Walk through the doors and you’ll be greeted by glittering trees, glowing garlands, and enough baubles to make Santa himself jealous. Whether you’re after a traditional red-and-gold theme or something a bit more sparkly, there’s a section for every style and budget.
🧑🎄 Santa’s Grotto Returns
Of course, no visit to Birchgrove at Christmas would be complete without seeing the big man himself. Santa arrives on Saturday, November 29, and will be in residence on Sunday, November 30 and every weekend in December, plus December 22, 23, and 24.
Families can visit the grotto from 10am to 4pm (closing an hour early at 3pm on Christmas Eve — he’s got a rather important job to get to, after all).
Tickets are £12 per child, with accompanying adults going free. Little visitors can even choose their own gift, which is then magically wrapped and sent down the grotto’s chimney by Santa’s very busy elves. It’s a lovely interactive touch that makes every visit feel special.
There’s no need to book. Just turn up, but be prepared for short queues at busy times.
🎁 The Heart of Local Christmas
Birchgrove has become one of those rare places that brings the whole community together at Christmas – a place where generations of families make their annual visit, take photos, pick decorations, and grab a hot chocolate on the way out.
For some, it’s where they buy their first tree as a couple; for others, it’s where they bring their grandkids to see Santa for the first time. Whatever the reason, it’s woven itself into the fabric of local festive life.
“It’s lovely seeing familiar faces come back every year,” Gary said. “For a lot of families, this is where Christmas really starts – and being part of that means everything to us.”
