The leader of South Holland District Council, Cllr Nick Worth, has joined his counterparts from the nine other Greater Lincolnshire councils to discuss the future of local government in the county. The meeting, which took place on Monday, 24 February 2025, focused on developing proposals for potential reorganisation, following the Government’s plans to replace the current two-tier system with new unitary authorities.
The move follows a letter sent on 5 February by Jim McMahon, Minister of State for Local Government and English Devolution, inviting all council leaders in two-tier local authority areas to submit proposals for unitary structures. The Government has outlined its expectations, including consideration of district boundaries, minimal disruption to vital services such as social care, and a target population size for each new authority.
Council leaders have been given a tight deadline to submit their initial plans by 21 March, with more detailed proposals expected by 28 November.
In response, the ten Lincolnshire councils have pledged to work together to explore all available options and ensure that any reorganisation prioritises the needs of residents and businesses across the region.
Cllr Nick Worth, representing South Holland District Council, said: “This is a significant moment for local government in Lincolnshire. We have a responsibility to ensure any changes bring real benefits to our residents. Collaboration between councils will be crucial in shaping a system that works for everyone.”
The discussions involve leaders from the following authorities:
- Cllr Anne Dorrian, Boston Borough Council
- Cllr Naomi Tweddle, City of Lincoln Council
- Cllr Craig Leyland, East Lindsey District Council
- Cllr Martin Hill, Lincolnshire County Council
- Cllr Philip Jackson, North East Lincolnshire Council
- Cllr Richard Wright, North Kesteven District Council
- Cllr Rob Waltham, North Lincolnshire Council
- Cllr Nick Worth, South Holland District Council
- Cllr Ashley Baxter, South Kesteven District Council
- Cllr Trevor Young, West Lindsey District Council
As the process unfolds, local residents can expect further updates on the progress of these plans and how potential changes could impact their communities.
